| Dan Kane: Book will showcase Stark County artists - Canton Repository Posted: 13 Mar 2010 07:58 AM PST A coffee-table book showcasing the work of Stark County visual artists is scheduled to be published this fall by Indigo Ink Press, a Canton-based nonprofit independent publisher. Titled "Stark ARThology," the hardcover book will spotlight artists working in all visual media, including painting, drawing, ceramics, fiber arts, photography, jewelry and more. Local artists are invited to submit their work at no charge for consideration by an advisory board. The deadline is April 30. Full submission details can be found at www.indigoinkpress.org. Artists selected for inclusion in "Stark ARThology" will receive two copies of the book. The book is the brainchild of Jessica Bennett, public relations and marketing manager for the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce. "I'm all about Stark County," Bennett says. "I'm passionate about the artists here, and I think this accessible, affordable volume will be a great way to introduce the community to the movement that is afoot here. Now is the time for this book." The "ARThology" project has received a grant from Arts in Stark, and a portion of the books proceeds will be donated to Arts in Stark's SmArts program. BATTLE UPDATE Congratulations to The Big Sweet, winners of The Repository's 2010 Battle of the Bands. Comprised of three sophomores from Jackson High School, Brad Berbari, Sam Regas and Drew Watson and a fourth member from Cleveland, Matt McDonald, the band has completed a full-length album of original songs, plus a cover of Big Star's "September Girls." Copies will be available at a CD release party April 10 at Quaker Steak & Lube. Kudos to the other six high-school bands who turned in solidly rocking performances at the nearly sold-out show March 6 at the Palace Theatre: Creation in Chaos, Ding Dong, The Endless Nameless, All the Blue Houses, The Skylight Revolution and Jurassic. OUR NATE Canton native and former Bolivar resident Nate Torrence can be seen in the romantic comedy "She's Out of My League," opening today in theaters nationwide. He plays Devon, one of star Jay Baruchel's buddies. Torrence, 32, appeared memorably as a tech-geek lab assistant in the comedy features "Get Smart" and "My Best Friend's Girl," and gained attention in a string of hilarious TV commercials for Capital One (with David Spade), Enterprise, NFL.com, Volkswagen and Golden Grahams. DANCER PRAISED Rachelle Rafailedes, a Manhattan-based graduate of Jackson High School and the Juilliard School, received praise in the New York Times for her recent performance in New York with the dance company Abraham In Motion. The Times critic singled out Rafailedes and two other dancers as "particularly impressive, balancing fluidity with finely calibrated precision." GRUNGE LIVES!
