Art books are still a luxury, but they continue to flourish, both in quality and quantity

By Mirela Roncevic -- Library Journal, 1/21/2010

Last summer, we brought backinto print an annual feature highlighting top-notch art books scheduled for fall release (see "Fall for Art," LJ 8/09). It offered an overview of the art-book industry and the challenges it faces amid library budget cuts while remaining committed to producing high-quality content in a variety of subjects, including fine arts, photography, architecture, and the decorative arts. Six months later—and using the same format that helps librarians zero in on what's outstanding in the coming months—we turn our attention to the first half of 2010.

Although fall has always been the season of the art book, spring catalogs—which for most art publishers stretch between January and June—are replete with intriguing and, in some cases, even groundbreaking new publications. The quality of the reproductions and scholarship continues to impress, but so does the growing diversity of subjects, as more and more titles continue to defy traditional art book categorization and cover new and emerging forms of expression, including digital photography, street art, and popular culture arts.

Starred () titles are highly recommended purchases for most libraries.
