Tampa's Glazer Children's Museum to install 80-foot mosaic - St. Petersburg Times

The $75,000 mosaic project, Spiral Fantasia — A Child's Dream, will be installed on the main entrance of the Glazer Children's Museum facing Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park. It will be approximately 80 feet long and 17 feet high.

DOWNTOWN TAMPA — Being called a perfectionist is just fine with Mari Gardner. The Baltimore-based artist creating an 80-foot mosaic for the Glazer Children's Museum takes that as a compliment.

"Mosaic needs to be done very specifically and scientifically if you want it to last,'' she said.

Organized chaos, she calls it.

Spiral Fantasia — A Child's Dream, will be installed in February on the main entrance facing Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park. Spirals within a spiral design convey discovery, imagination and playful expression, says Gardner.

Museum architect John Curran contacted Gardner to submit a proposal for a public art commission after seeing her work at the American Visionary museum in Baltimore. A Tampa ordinance requires new public buildings to spend 1 percent of construction costs on artwork to enrich cultural appeal. Gardner's commission is funded by Voices for Children, a support group of Guardian ad Litem, with a $75,000 commitment — $5,000 now and $17,500 paid over four years.

"We won't have a building or park to appreciate guardians, past, present and future,'' said Betsy Smith, executive director. "So this is our way to put up a tribute to these children's advocates." A donor campaign is under way.

After several preliminary sketches, a final design and budget were approved in September. Gardner arrived a month later to begin work at the former Kid City museum site behind Lowry Park Zoo. A break-in and robbery last month caused her to move the project to an industrial park unit off Busch Boulevard.

At Curran's suggestion, Gardner hired a team of University of South Florida graduate students to assist her 20 hours a week. Architect majors Emily Resciniti, Ashley Garrett and Daniel Johnson, and fine arts major AnnaSophie Ruju learned Gardner's technique, working alongside her assistant, local artist Josh Bowden, and her husband, Nelson Silva Euflauzino Jr.

"The more they do, the more awesome they become," said Gardner, 33, who holds a bachelor's degree in fine arts photography from the Art Institute of Boston and a master's in sculpture from the Maryland Institute College of Art.

"A project this size can't be done alone."

It's no wonder Gardner likens the mosaic process to community endeavors.

"For me, it's the same definition,'' she says. "Little tiny pieces coming together to make one big design like a bunch of people make up a community."

Glazer Children's Museum officials expect to open in late summer or early fall.

2010-01-20 22:47:01 - Services to Printing in Australia - Industry Risk Rating Report - a new market research report on companiesandmarkets.com

www.companiesandmarkets.com/Summary-Market-Report/services-to-pr ..

This is the replacement for the November 2008 edition of Services to Printing in Australia Industry Risk Ratings Report. Industry Risk Ratings Synopsis This Industry Risk Ratings report evaluates the inherent risks associated with the Services to Printing in Australia industry. Industry Risk is assumed to be ´the difficulty, or otherwise, of the

business operating environment´. The report looks at the operational risk associated with this industry. Three types of risk are recognized in our analysis. These are: risk arising from within the industry itself (structural risk), risks arising from the expected future performance of the industry (growth risk) and risk arising from forces external to the industry (external sensitivity risk). This approach is new in that it analyses non-financial information surrounding each industry. Industries are scored on a 9-point scale, where 1 represents the lowest risk and 9 the highest. The Industry Risk score measures expected Industry Risk over the coming 12-18 months. Industry Definition Services to printing mostly consist of performing prepress and post-press services. Prepress services are the steps required to turn a design into final form, ready for final printing on a printing press. These steps often include design and layout, typesetting/image setting, graphic arts photography, colour separation, image assembly, and plate making. Post press is the professional finishing of print products (e.g., book binding) in support of printing activities. The Customers of firms offering Services to Printing come from a large range of industries including Printing (although many printers have their own prepress and post press operations), Publishing (including magazines) and Advertisers (such as retailers). Report Contents Risk Overview The Risk Overview chapter includes sections on Industry Definition and Activities, Industry Risk Score and Risk Rating Analysis. The Industry Definition and Activities section provides a detailed definition of the activities carried out by operators in this industry as defined in NAICS. A list of the primary activities of the industry is also included. The Industry Risk Score section provides the Overall Industry Risk Score as well as the Risk Scores for each of the three types of risk covered that combine to form the Overall Industry Risk Score. These three types of risk are Structural Risk, Growth Risk and External Sensitivity Risk. The Risk Rating Analysis section discusses the underlying factors contributing to the Overall Industry Risk Score. Structural Risk The Structural Risk chapter looks at risk arising from within the industry itself and provides a detailed discussion of the industry’s level of exposure to seven key indicators. These key indicators are Barriers to Entry, Competition, Industry Exports, Industry Imports, Level of Assistance, Life Cycle Stage and Volatility of Industry. The Overall Structural Risk Score is a weighted aggregation of these seven key indicators. Each of the key indicators is discussed in detail in this section. Growth Risk The Growth Risk chapter looks at risks arising from the expected future performance of the industry. The Overall Growth Risk Score is determined by amalgamating the scores for Recent Industry Growth and Forecast Industry Growth. Detailed analysis is provided discussing the reasons for the growth scores of both. Sensitivity Risk The Sensitivity Risk chapter looks at risks arising from forces (sensitivities) external to the industry. The Overall External Sensitivity Risk Score is determined by identifying the most significant (up to 6) external factors and weighting them to represent how significant each sensitivity is to the performance of the industry. Examples of External Sensitivities are Exchange Rates, Interest Rates, Commodity Prices and Government Regulations. There is also a detailed analysis of the affect each of the sensitivities has on the industry, including charts and data tables where appropriate. Industry Risk and Industry Risk Scoring Methodology This chapter provides an overview of how IBISWorld defines Industry Risk and discusses the methodology used to arrive at an Industry Risk Score. There is also a table that provides a definition of the seven levels of Industry Risk. C2413 - Services to Printing in Australia
