Hali Feldman and Benjamin Friehling - Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Posted: 28 Feb 2010 11:01 PM PST

Hali Tara Feldman and Benjamin Lawrence Friehling were married Saturday evening. Rabbi Marvin Antosofsky officiated at the W Hotel in Manhattan.

The bride, 31, is the senior photo editor in New York for Details magazine, a Condé Nast publication. She graduated from Ithaca College and received a master's degree in fine arts photography from the School of Visual Arts.

She is the daughter of Randi G. Feldman and Lowell S. Feldman of Bethel, N.Y. Her parents own the Terrace Healthcare Center, a nursing and rehabilitation center in the Bronx, and Rolling Stone Ranch, an equestrian center in Bethel.

The bridegroom, 27, is an owner of Benji & Jake's, a restaurant in White Lake, N.Y. He graduated from Sterling College.

He is a son of Dr. Linda A. Friehling and Dr. Ted C. Friehling of Great Falls, Va. His mother is a pediatrician at Children's Medical Associates of Northern Virginia in Alexandria. His father, a cardiac electrophysiologist, is a founding partner of Arrhythmia Associates in Fairfax, Va., and the director of cardiac electrophysiology at Inova Fairfax Hospital there.

Mr. Friehling was selling pizza at a farmers' market not far from his restaurant when he met Ms. Feldman's father in 2006. The following summer, Mr. Feldman took his family, including his daughter, to Mr. Friehling's new restaurant in White Lake, near their home in the Catskills.

"She was fun to talk to," Mr. Friehling said of his first meeting with Ms. Feldman. "I was immediately in love with her. Without a doubt."

"I didn't sense that she was interested in me though," he continued. "She had her own life going on in the city. Upstate was just a vacation spot for her, and I was a small-restaurant owner. I didn't think I was quite up to her caliber."

On the weekends she visited her family, and they would go to his restaurant.

"He was adorable but too young, and we lived in separate places, so I never considered it," Ms. Feldman said of Mr. Friehling, who she noted was very persistent when he would go to their table.

It would take a couple of years and an accident before they settled into being a couple.

Mr. Friehling closed his restaurant every February to vacation in Tulum, Mexico, with friends. In 2009, a few weeks before the restaurant closed for the trip, Ms. Feldman, who was on one of her visits, happened to mention that she also loved Mexico and that she was planning to be in the same area on vacation.

They didn't make any official plans to meet, but one day in Tulum, Mr. Friehling saw her walking on the beach.

"She was unbelievably beautiful," he said. "I was very excited to see her."

They socialized for the next three or four days and got to know each other better. "Sparks flew," Ms. Feldman said.

The relationship, however, did not turn romantic until a month later, again while dining with her family at Benji & Jake's. As the evening began winding down, the couple found themselves listening to live music and talking in a quiet corner of the upstairs bar, out of sight of her parents.

"I was leaving for the night," Ms. Feldman remembered, "and I knew I couldn't leave without kissing him."

Mr. Friehling recalled, "She leaned over and gave me a nice kiss." And, he added, with that kiss they became "very strongly connected."

A month later, they were horseback riding on Ms. Feldman's family ranch. A gorgeous sunset was their backdrop.

"It was beautiful, like something out of a movie," Mr. Friehling recalled -- that is until the heart-stopping moment when he was trotting downhill, ahead of Ms. Feldman, and looked back. "Her horse didn't have her on it."

"I panicked," he said. "I grabbed both horses and found her laying on the ground in a lot of pain." He quickly got her to a hospital in Harris, N.Y., and she was immediately transferred to a hospital in Albany.

"She was more upset that we had just started our lives together, and she was terrified she was going to be paralyzed," Mr. Friehling said. "She was also on meds," and told him she was afraid he was going to leave her now.

Instead, he never left her side for 26 straight hours. They learned that her injury was a fractured lower back.

"I was in bed for a month, and he was taking care of me, and it was amazing," Ms. Feldman said. "I saw a whole other side of him to fall in love with." PAULA SCHWARTZ

Online Photo Services Leader Taps World-Class Professional Photographers to Provide Classroom-Based Instruction and In-the-Field Workshops to Boys and Girls Interested in Experiencing the Magic and Imagination of the Photographic Arts

TORRANCE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Pictage, Inc., the leading professional photographer community and online platform for marketing, selling, and fulfilling professional photo products, today announced it is teaming up with more than a dozen world-class professional photographers and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Las Vegas to host a free photography education day on Saturday, March 6, 2010, for area children interested in exploring the magic and artistry of photography. The half-day event, titled "Lens & Learn: Inspiring Kids with Photography," is scheduled from 12:00 – 5:00 p.m. PST at the Lied Memorial Boys & Girls Club facility. More than 100 boys and girls will be provided with detailed classroom instruction concerning photography basics, followed by hands-on, in-the-field training and photo shoots at the Springs Preserve.

"Lens & Learn: Inspiring Kids with Photography"

The special event is part of Pictage's week-long presence at the Wedding & Portrait Photographers International (WPPI) 2010 Convention and Trade Show, March 4-11, 2010, at the MGM Grand Conference Center. The show, one of the world's largest conferences exclusively for professional photographers, brings together over 12,000 attendees, nearly 400 exhibitors, and over 100 visionary session presenters to showcase new products, services, tools, and techniques that enhance the creativity and imagination of the photographic arts.

"Photography teaches new perspectives, as well as being a really fun skill to learn. With so many talented photographers gathering together for WPPI, we thought it would be great to bring together kids and world-class photographers to create a comprehensive one-day education program in partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Las Vegas," said Jim Collins, chief executive officer of Pictage, Inc., and a passionate amateur photographer. "It's our sincere hope that this event encourages boys and girls of all ages to fully explore the creative appeal of photography, as a hobby or as a career, and we're excited about doing many more of these experiential workshops across the country with this great organization and others."

"The Boys & Girls Clubs of Las Vegas is committed to designing and introducing value-added programs that are closely aligned with our organizational mission, and meet the diverse needs and interests of the local children we serve every day at our eight area clubhouses," said Dulcinea Almazan, executive director and chief operating officer of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Las Vegas. "This photography education day is an excellent example of that commitment, and one which helps us expand our portfolio of program activities in the arts, and in education and career development. We are grateful to Pictage for its support, expertise, and member involvement in launching this ambitious effort, and we look forward to receiving feedback from the children and their families on how we can build on this initial success."

For the event, Boys & Girls Clubs of Las Vegas will identify and recruit up to 100 children to participate, and will provide all food, beverages, audio/visual requirements, and transportation needed throughout the day. The organization will also oversee the acquisition of required permits and parental authorizations. Pictage employees and affiliated photographers will furnish all professional instruction and classroom materials, and image printing services. Canon U.S.A. has generously loaned digital SLR cameras for the boys and girls and instructors to use for the event.

On Saturday, March 6, Pictage will set up multiple classrooms at the Lied Memorial Boys & Girls Club located at 2850 South Lindell Road, Las Vegas, NV 89146. Each classroom will be staffed by Pictage member photographers and assistants, with instruction led by the photographers. Once the classroom sessions have concluded, Boys & Girls Clubs of Las Vegas associates will transport the children to the Springs Preserve where each photographer will work with a group of 10 boys and girls on a photo "scavenger hunt." In this setting, the children will be challenged to use cameras creatively and apply specific lessons learned from the classroom sessions. A short time upon the shoot's completion, each child will receive a coffee table-style book showcasing a collection of images captured from throughout the event.
