TORRANCE, Calif. - (BUSINESS WIRE) - Pictage, Inc., the leading professional photographer community and online platform for marketing, selling, and fulfilling professional photo products, today announced it is teaming up with more than a dozen world-class professional photographers and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Las Vegas to host a free photography education day on Saturday, March 6, 2010, for area children interested in exploring the magic and artistry of photography. The half-day event, titled "Lens & Learn: Inspiring Kids with Photography," is scheduled from 12:00 - 5:00 p.m. PST at the Lied Memorial Boys & Girls Club facility. More than 100 boys and girls will be provided with detailed classroom instruction concerning photography basics, followed by hands-on, in-the-field training and photo shoots at the Springs Preserve.

The special event is part of Pictage's week-long presence at the Wedding & Portrait Photographers International (WPPI) 2010 Convention and Trade Show, March 4-11, 2010, at the MGM Grand Conference Center. The show, one of the world's largest conferences exclusively for professional photographers, brings together over 12,000 attendees, nearly 400 exhibitors, and over 100 visionary session presenters to showcase new products, services, tools, and techniques that enhance the creativity and imagination of the photographic arts.

"Photography teaches new perspectives, as well as being a really fun skill to learn. With so many talented photographers gathering together for WPPI, we thought it would be great to bring together kids and world-class photographers to create a comprehensive one-day education program in partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Las Vegas," said Jim Collins, chief executive officer of Pictage, Inc., and a passionate amateur photographer. "It's our sincere hope that this event encourages boys and girls of all ages to fully explore the creative appeal of photography, as a hobby or as a career, and we're excited about doing many more of these experiential workshops across the country with this great organization and others."

"The Boys & Girls Clubs of Las Vegas is committed to designing and introducing value-added programs that are closely aligned with our organizational mission, and meet the diverse needs and interests of the local children we serve every day at our eight area clubhouses," said Dulcinea Almazan, executive director and chief operating officer of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Las Vegas. "This photography education day is an excellent example of that commitment, and one which helps us expand our portfolio of program activities in the arts, and in education and career development. We are grateful to Pictage for its support, expertise, and member involvement in launching this ambitious effort, and we look forward to receiving feedback from the children and their families on how we can build on this initial success."

For the event, Boys & Girls Clubs of Las Vegas will identify and recruit up to 100 children to participate, and will provide all food, beverages, audio/visual requirements, and transportation needed throughout the day. The organization will also oversee the acquisition of required permits and parental authorizations. Pictage employees and affiliated photographers will furnish all professional instruction and classroom materials, and image printing services. Canon U.S.A. has generously loaned digital SLR cameras for the boys and girls and instructors to use for the event.

On Saturday, March 6, Pictage will set up multiple classrooms at the Lied Memorial Boys & Girls Club located at 2850 South Lindell Road, Las Vegas, NV 89146. Each classroom will be staffed by Pictage member photographers and assistants, with instruction led by the photographers. Once the classroom sessions have concluded, Boys & Girls Clubs of Las Vegas associates will transport the children to the Springs Preserve where each photographer will work with a group of 10 boys and girls on a photo "scavenger hunt." In this setting, the children will be challenged to use cameras creatively and apply specific lessons learned from the classroom sessions. A short time upon the shoot's completion, each child will receive a coffee table-style book showcasing a collection of images captured from throughout the event.

Portraits of Truth - Whit

Posted: 10 Mar 2010 04:22 PM PST

The art gallery at Westby Hall has revealed the truth behind personality expressions captured in a series of photos. Photographed by Claire Cossaboon, the photography exhibit "Portrait" is premiering at the Rowan Art Gallery on March 9 and will end on March 22.

This senior project, which took nearly two whole semesters to complete, features 12 life size photos which contain images of everyday people captured in their utmost realistic natural appearance, according to Cossaboon.

Jennifer Drumgoole, an adjunct photography professor, is familiar with Cossaboon's work.

"This collection is only one of many of her bodies of work, but this one is specific in context of portraits in format,"  Drumgoole said.

Cossaboon's studio is located in her own basement, which has helped her gain experience in the field of professional and fine arts photography.

"I had each of my subjects come to my studio which has its own backdrop and lighting," Cossaboon said. "I didn't tell them what to wear, which was important to me because I wanted to reflect them as people, the way they really are."

Inspired by the famous photographer, Irving Penn, Cossaboon's photos focus on portraits of people from an artistic view.

"This inspiration was like a stepping stone, a spring board for Claire's project in terms of style and the way the subjects are treated in the photos," Drumgoole said. "Her treatment of gender, identity, technique and dedication defines art making."

At first, Cossaboon didn't know what to do for her senior art project. What she did know was that she is passionate about photography, and since she does it as a profession, she wanted to apply it to her senior show. Ironically, the day after Cossaboon discovered a source of inspiration, Penn passed away, which further encouraged her to continue this motivation for her gallery.

One great photo being featured, titled "Jessie," portrays a young, red-haired woman behind a gray backdrop, standing in an intricate pose, wearing a fancy black dress and a mint coat. Surprisingly, she is sloppily eating a pastry dessert.

"There is a strangeness in them, but in a beautiful way," Drumgoole said.

Be sure to join family and friends for the opening reception of "Portrait" today, March 11, from 7 p.m.-9.
