| Traditional skills on exhibit at county fair - Florida Today Posted: 16 Mar 2010 04:54 PM PDT An old-fashioned county fair gets under way Thursday at Wickham Park with blue ribbon competitions, educational displays and classes, 4-H animal shows, local bands and carnival rides. Actitivies run through March 28 at the Wickham Park Pavilion -- just south of the Brevard Community College campus in Melbourne. There will be a ranch rodeo (1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Wickham Park equestrian center), horse expo (all day Sunday at the equestrian center), chili cook-off (noon Saturday), 4-H exhibits, archery contest, livestock exhibits, dog agility demonstrations, horticulture events and more. Among the 4-H activities to watch for: A fashion show that starts at 1 p.m. Saturday at the pavilion -- featuring youngsters modeling the clothing they've made; the 4-H poultry competition -- from egg-coloring and photo contests to a rooster-crowing contest that starts 4 p.m. Saturday in the animal tent; and a heifer show that starts at 2 p.m. Sunday. There's still time to compete in the culinary arts -- quick breads, cookies and preserves. Drop off entries between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. March 25 at the Brevard County Extension office in Cocoa or Palm Bay and the winners will be displayed at the fairgrounds on the afternoon of March 27. Up to 30 youths, ages 17 and under, can register through Friday to compete in the marine science division, including handmade lures, drawings, posters and casting. Register at the Cocoa extension office or by calling 633-1702 or The horticulture competition for all ages, including adults, will be Saturday -- with dropoff and registration from 8 a.m. to noon at the fairgrounds and the winners displayed from noon until 3:30 p.m. Categories include hanging baskets, container gardens, vegetables (largest, best quality, oddest-shaped) and fruit (best quality). Registration is over to compete in knitting, crocheting and machine-sewing categories and in the fine arts -- photography, sketching and drawing -- but work from all ages will be on display. Admission is $8 per person Sunday through Thursday; $10 per person on Friday and Saturday; and $5 per person on opening night. Admission includes midway rides, provided by Myers International Midway.
