Key Peninsula Middle School celebrated some of its artists last month in a contest sponsored by the PTSA. Titled "Reflections," the theme of "Beauty is" was interpreted by the artists in Visual Arts, Photography, Literature and Dance. Key Peninsula artists judged nearly 50 entries, with 30 of them in the Literature division. First place winners, whose work will compete at state level next month, were Dakotah Carr, Visual Arts; Kelson Mills, Photography; Nicholas Bosch, Literature; and Mackenzie Mills, Dance. Mills, a student of Irish dance, created her own steps to perform for a video presentation as the only dance entry. Each student won $25 and a cougar key chain. All entries received a personalized certificate, a special recognition ribbon and will share a spot in the KPMS yearbook. Second-place awards were for $10, and third-place award winners received Galaxy Theater or McDonald's tickets. Honorable Mention winners received Dairy Queen coupons. Second- and third-place winners were Sarah Kashuba and Kelson Mills, Visual Arts; Kelson Mills and Mackenzie Mills, Photography; Tre Starks and Karissa Talent, Literature. Honorable mentions included Molly Duttry, Kiera Hill, Melissa Ellis, Patrick Smith, Victoria Duram and Christina Peer, Visual Arts; Haley Wade, Photography; Pavel Arustamyan, Kaylee Jones, Kayla Mathis, Sarah Meaney and Mackenzie Mills, Literature. Most of the judges spoke at the awards presentation, where the various entries were on display without their award ribbons. The judges were unanimous in emphasizing their pleasure with all of the talent shown by the students who entered. They also commented on the courage of the entrants to put themselves and their work out for public inspection. "It takes courage to show your soul," judge Rena Moriarity said. Judges, some of whose work was displayed at the event, included Kathy Bauer, Britta Brones, John and Andrea Jewell, Moriarity, Ted Olinger, Robin Peterson, Danna Webster and Colleen Slater. "It doesn't matter who places," Peterson said. "It matters that you cared enough to compete." Lisa Mills and Stephanie Flintoff worked as co-chairs for the program. State winners will move on to national level. The KPMS PTSA provided the cash prizes, and Galaxy Theatre, McDonald's and Dairy Queen donated prize coupons.
