Art photography is back with a vengeance.

This month, a number of photo exhibitions are opening or continuing at museums and art institutions throughout Orange County and Los Angeles.

Up in L.A., the Getty Center just opened "Urban Panoramas: Opie, Liao, Kim," featuring images by Catherine Opie, Jeff Chien-Hsing Liao and Soo Kim through June 6. The group show coincides with "A Record of Emotion: The Photographs of Frederick H. Evans," highlighting portraiture, landscapes and architectural work by the turn-of-the-20th-century British photographer.

The Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach is getting ready to open "Changing the Focus: Latin American Photography (1990-2005)" on Feb. 13. The museum says it's the first survey exhibition of contemporary Latin American photography and photo-based art to be presented in the Los Angeles area.

In Orange County, the retrospective "BC Space: Mything in Action" opens Saturday at the Grand Central Art Center in Santa Ana and runs through April 11. The related show, "Armchair Arteologist: Photographic Retrospective by Mark Chamberlain," featuring works by the owner of BC Space, opened Jan. 21 at Soka University in Aliso Viejo and runs through May 14.

At the Irvine Fine Arts Center, "Photographers' Xchange" and "Vintage Rock & Roll Photography by Edward Finnell" open Feb. 19 and run through March 27.

In Fullerton, a show by legally blind photographer Kurt Weston opened Thursday at the Muckenthaler Cultural Center, running through March 28. And an illuminating show of black and white images of New Guinea continues at the Bowers Museum through June 6.

So what's with this trend of photo shows?

"Photography since the beginning has been a medium that has captured the attention of people," said Idurre Alonso, curator of MoLAA's Latin American photography exhibit. "In today's world, we're surrounded by images all the time. Everybody takes photographs today. That could be a reason why people relate more to photography than to painting or sculpture."

The Latin American show offers a look at experimental photography, digital and conceptual work and photo-based art. The time period coincides with a breakthrough decade for Latin American photography, when photographers south of the U.S. became a big part of the international art scene. More than 80 works by 37 photographers are featured in "Changing the Focus."

At the Getty, which is known for its historic and growing photography collection, "Urban Panoramas" provides perspectives on three different cities: Los Angeles, New York and Reykjavik, Iceland. The exhibit includes text, audio by each photographer and maps of each city, allowing viewers to navigate the metropolises as if on a visit.

"We are showing work that I think will surprise some people," said Virginia Heckert, curator of the show and associate curator of photographs at the Getty. "All of the work has been acquired in the last 18 months. We are beginning to develop contemporary holdings that allow us to really show off the collection."

Heckert surmises that photography is a popular medium because it's something a general audience can relate to easily.

"It's something that people can relate to very well, and perhaps broaden their knowledge of the medium," she said. Heckert added that all of these current shows are "a great opportunity to broaden our vision and expand our horizon, whether it's Latin America or New Guinea," or understanding the materials that are available to different photographers.

BC SPACE – MORE THAN JUST A GALLERY

Here in Orange County, the Grand Central Art Center is opening a retrospective on BC Space, the Laguna Beach gallery founded 37 years ago on Forest Avenue. By all accounts, it's the oldest continuously operating gallery in Orange County. The "BC" represents the initials of founders Jerry Burchfield, who died Sept. 11, 2009, and Mark Chamberlain, a longtime Laguna photographer and art activist.

In addition to showcasing local photography for the past four decades, BC Space has been a performance hall, a public meeting place and headquarters for community involvement and social activism. In fact, the Laguna Canyon Project, which helped save Laguna Canyon from major development, and the Legacy Project, which has been documenting the transformation of El Toro Marine Corps Air Station into the Great Park, emanated from BC Space and its participants.

"BC Space is as much a state of mind as much as a physical space," said Mike McGee, gallery director at Cal State Fullerton and co-curator of "Mything in Action." The ideas generated at BC Space "go beyond the physical gallery," he said.

McGee postulates that the achievements of BC Space over the years have helped position photography squarely alongside its fine-art relatives – painting, sculpture and installation – especially here in Southern California.

The rise in popularity of photography in Southern California coincides with the ascendance of Los Angeles as an international art center, argues Doug McCulloh, an L.A.-based photographer and independent curator.

"New York, Paris and London have been photo-heavy for the last 10 years, for sure," McCulloh said. "Los Angeles is just catching up now. It's coming into its own. And photography has taken on a bigger and bigger role."

McCulloh also paraphrases Susan Sontag in calling photography "the meta-art that devours the other arts."

"Photography takes as its subject everything else, including the other arts," he said. "The territory that photography takes as its subject has so dramatically expanded, if you go back 50 years ago. There's no comparison."

The ubiquity of photo shows in Southern California is just further evidence of the medium's power and appeal.
