The 12 contestants in the Miss Philippines Bahrain 2009 competition last night went heel to heel in the first of four stages in this year's event.

Compatriots Venus Quebral, Kristal Vivero, Manal Mubarak, Geraldine Ilasin, Angelica Cruz, Rochelle Maglanque, Princess Cabiling, Ivy Infante, Zerylle Lim, Kate Bayle, Maricris Merto and Amybel Ballesta participated during a showcase of garments from the Woolworths 2009 autumn/winter collection, Haute Couture Filipino Designer Council, and designers Raul Rojo and Tony Arroyo.

The first instalment of this year's pageant took place at the Ramada Palace hotel's Twister Lounge in Gudaibiya, where more than 300 guests were in attendance.

The competition will continue with a talent round on December 10, a swimsuit contest on December 11, and a coronation night on December 18.

As well as kicking off this year's Miss Philippines pageant, last night's fashion show coincided with the continuation of the Filipino Club's 30th anniversary celebrations.

The celebrations will continue this weekend with a showcase of the nation's regional festivals, arts, culinary delights and musical performances at the Andalus Garden on Thursday night.

The show will feature Filipino cuisine and fashion, traditional games, an arts, photography and handicrafts bazaar, cultural presentations, karaoke singing and information booths for government services available to overseas Filipino workers and special interest groups.

A bumper raffle draw will also take place with a new Mazda 3 up for grabs among the prizes to be won.

To be held from 3pm to 8pm, the event is open to all and is free to enter. thanratty@gdn.com.bh
