| Around West County: Odenton Improvement Association names 'Citizen of ... - HometownAnnapolis.com Posted: 02 Dec 2009 09:29 AM PST Doreen was a member of the Odenton Small Area Planning Committee and the co-chairwoman of the land use committee. She is a former vice president of the GOIA. More recently Doreen was chairwoman of the Odenton Town Center Oversight Committee. She also is a former president of the Piney Orchard Community Association. She helped focus the direction of change in Odenton in a positive way. Doreen was also presented with citations from the county executive, the County Council and the General Assembly. Knights of Columbus Keough Council 5263 is holding their monthly pancake breakfast from 8 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Council Hall, 1381 Becknel Ave. in Odenton. The menu includes eggs (and egg beaters) to order; omelets with choice of any combination of onions, tomatoes, green peppers, cheese, mushrooms and salsa; biscuits and gravy; hash browns; sausage; bacon; turkey ham; toast (white and wheat); buttermilk pancakes; peach pancakes; and coffee, tea, cocoa and orange juice. This month's specialty pancake flavor of the month is cranberry. The cost is $8 for adults, $4 for children between 6 and 12, and free for children 5 and under. Maximum cost for a family is $24. The public is invited to attend. You're invited to a flapjack fundraiser breakfast to support the Ark and Dove Presbyterian Church's youth summer programs from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday at Applebee's, 2408 Brandermill Blvd. in Gambrills. The cost is $6 per person. School of the Incarnation Girl Scout Troop 5000 and Troop 1107 donated almost 50 stuffed animals to Project SAFE, an organization that collects gently used stuffed animals and donates them to local fire departments and hospitals to assist children in crisis. Troop 5000 packed 20 Thanksgiving baskets and donated them to Sarah's House in Odenton for the families who live at the home. The baskets looked like turkeys and were packed with snacks, stickers and juice pouches. The third annual lighting of the Odenton Community Christmas Tree is at 4 p.m. Saturday at Odenton Babington Green, located at the southeast corner of Piney Orchard Parkway and Odenton Road. The event will feature a Christmas carol choir from Arundel High School, hot cider and cookies, and a visit by Santa and Mrs. Claus by firetruck to light the tree. The Piney Orchard Figure Skating Team is once again providing a collection box for the annual Toys For Tots campaign. Starting Saturday, you can stop by the Piney Orchard Ice Arena and drop a new and unwrapped toy in the large collection box positioned in the front lobby. The collection will end Dec. 12 when the gifts will be picked up by a Marine Corps representative before redistribution of toys to area families in need. This class is designed for exercise and flexibility by using every part of your body. You will strengthen and tone your legs, back, arms and stomach. Volunteers are needed for the Anne Arundel County Police Reserve Officer Program. This is a uniformed position to assist sworn officers in traffic control, administrative duties, community relations, etc. Volunteers must be over 21 and undergo a criminal background check. Hours of availability are flexible. Reserve officers work assignments all hours of the day and weekends. A minimum of 16 service hours per month is required and volunteers can be placed at any of the four district stations. Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS) Program is designed to involve civilian volunteers in non-enforcement roles within the county Police Department. Members of the VIPS Program share their time and talents performing such tasks as clerical assistance, computer programming, crime analysis, data processing, graphic arts, photography and other tasks as the need arises. VIPS personnel do not wear uniforms nor are they compensated. Applicants must be age 18 or older, have a Maryland Driver's License with a good driving record, and be capable of performing a minimum of 16 hours of volunteer service per month.
