The Ouachita River Art Gallery in February is featuring the black-and-white fine arts photography show, "The Mystique Of New Orleans," by local photographer (and "semi-retired" pharmacist) Emily B. Brodnax. Brodnax centered her show around treasures, usual and unusual, seen and rarely seen, found in New Orleans on two recent trips there. Brodnax continues to do the increasingly lost art of gelatin silver prints in a "wet" darkroom on archival paper. She expresses a sincere love for the entire photo taking/printmaking process and says that photography is an art and not to be dismissed by those who fail to recognize the magic created in the darkroom. The Ouachita River Art Gallery, 308 Trenton St., West Monroe invites the public to see the show during February. The gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free. Brodnax's work can also be seen at ORAG's extension gallery located in the Ouachita Independent Bank lobby on 18th and Louisville in Monroe. Information: 322-2380. | Girls recognized for photography - Longview News-Journal Posted: 12 Feb 2010 10:05 AM PST Message from fivefilters.org: If you can, please donate to the full-text RSS service so we can continue developing it. When Alex Mack and her family visited New Mexico in October, the third grader took dozens of pictures of the scenery. Little did she know that one of her photographs would be awarded an entry in a state art contest. "I like taking pictures of the clouds and the mountains," Alex said Thursday after she received a local award from Longview's PTA for her work. The awards ceremony and a luncheon were held at Ware Elementary School. Alex, who attends Bramlette Elementary School, along with Carrie Gilliland of Hudson PEP and Mackenzie Hedgecock of Doris McQueen received awards for art they entered in the association's annual Reflections contest. The theme this year is "Beauty is..." and Alex entered a photo of New Mexico mountains with a blue cloud-filled sky in the background. The school PTA selects a campus winner and those proceed to the area PTA. The area PTA selected the three winners whose photos, art and literature will now be judged at the state level. The national Reflections program started in 1969 and has encouraged millions of students to explore creativity in literature, visual arts, photography, music, dance and film, said Sherry Lewis, president of the Longview council PTA . Lewis presented medals to Longview's three winners during the PTA's annual Founder's Day luncheon, which honors the origins of the association. "This is a time to reflect and take pride in our accomplishments," Lewis said to a room filled with teachers, administrators, parents and students. The state PTA plans to announce winners in March, according to its Web site. Those students will go on to compete at the national level. This was Alex's third entry in the annual contest. "I'm proud," she said of her win. Five Filters featured article: Chilcot Inquiry. Available tools: PDF Newspaper, Full Text RSS, Term Extraction. |
