| Column: 4-H teaches kids skills and lessons for life - Daily Tribune Posted: 08 Oct 2009 01:33 AM PDT Editor's note: National 4-H Week is Oct. 4 to 10. Have you even wondered what you can do in 4-H? For starters, you can show livestock and pets, arts and crafts and much more. There are so many projects in 4-H. You can take your pick from many animal projects, which include dairy, beef, swine, sheep, market animals, goats, horses, ponies, poultry, rabbits, dogs, domesticated exotic animals or cats. There are also projects in plant and soil science, flowers and houseplants, natural science, cultural arts, photography, computers, woodworking, electricity, mechanical science, foods and nutrition, clothing, knitting, crocheting, home environment, family living, communications, youth leadership, health, political and social sciences. As a 4-H member, you can enter as many of these projects as you have time for. Anyone in grades kindergarten through one year past high school can join 4-H, and after you are too old to show in 4-H you can become a project leader. You also can attend camps. There are arts camps, summer camps, leader workshops and many more different kinds of camps. I have attended a few arts camps, and they are lots of fun. You can practice everything from photography and juggling, to drama, cooking or oil painting. You meet lots of new friends and reunite with old ones from previous camps. Some 4-H groups hold their own camps. These are usually targeted for the younger kids in the 4-H group so everyone gets to know each other better and the older kids get a chance to be counselors and make the decisions. These camps are always fun. You do not need your own animal to be able to show one. If you have your own horse, or don't have one and want to still ride, join 4-H. You can become a horseless horse member and show as horseless horse at fair. You can also do the same thing with the other animal projects. If you want to learn the basics about animals, you can learn them in 4-H by experienced project leaders who know what they are doing. Learn how to properly show your animals and get them exposed to new things. You learn by doing and so do the animals. |
