| Photographer lands in Grand Rapids - Daily Tribune Posted: 29 Sep 2009 01:36 AM PDT Teri Bertin of Grand Rapids took the long route -- from her native Thunder Bay, Canada, through Chile and Argentina -- to display her digital art Sept. 20 in the Grand Affair Art Show at the Centralia Center. The trip, with her Canon camera, has covered 30 years of growing into a fine art photographer. Teri and Geoff, married 25 years, have two children, Josh, 23, of Calgary, Alberta, and Brianna, 22, of Thunder Bay. They lived in Thunder Bay until 2005 then in Los Angeles, Chile, for two years, moving to this area when Geoff became manager of Erco Worldwide Chemical in Port Edwards. On South American "road trips," Teri photographed foothills and volcanoes in the Andes and hiked the active Volcan Villarrica in Pucon. On a Buenos Aires, Argentina, visit, she photographed spectacular architecture, gorgeous flowers and friendly people. "I have no formal photographic training, just 30 years of trial and error in photography," Teri said, noting the "amazingly steep learning curve of the digital age." Belonging for 10 years to Circles of Confusion photography club in Thunder Bay, and now the Focal Point Camera Club in Stevens Point, has been "immensely valuable in gaining knowledge." The various elementary schools she attended included a one-room schoolhouse with one teacher for 19 fourth- and fifth-graders. In high school she excelled in art, but in college studied secretarial arts. "Photography for me is a continuing process of self-exploration, trying to find what inspires me and what my eye is drawn to the most," Teri said. "I love to photograph people, although I'm a little too introverted to make it a career." In their travels, she does much scenic shooting, "with Geoff patiently carting all my gear and getting up at all kinds of early hours so that I can capture that 'golden hour.' I can spend hours photographing flowers with a macro lens." She credits her uncle, who had a darkroom when she was a teen, as interesting her in photography. And "after spending many hours sketching with pencil and ink, I discovered that photography offered gratifying results faster." |
